We Need More Canadian Content in our Schools

The 1st Version - 1964

There needs to be more content in our Canadian Schools.  Our children are growing up oblivious of our Canadian culture, heritage, and completely non-cognitive of our Canadian icons, images, and symbols.

I work at a Private school and am appalled at the lack of knowledge these children have of our own Country.

Example:  I showed a picture of this guy...

The answers I received were, Frosty the Snowman, a snowman...or basically a shrug.  Not only did they not know who he was but also had no idea of what he represented.  Meaning they didn't even know about the Quebec Winter Carnival.  Some of our teachers also had no idea about this guy "The Bonhomme", or the Carnival too.

Our fourth grade students are reading wonderful stories about Winn-Dixie, and Open Court Stories about American explorers or American life,  but nothing on Canadian stories.

One student wanted to write to Barak Obama, but at the same time had no clue who Stephen Harper is.
As for history our class has spent half the years term learning about Medieval Times (mind you
I love that era), but where is the Canadian history...we  do have our own history.

On February 15th I brought in a big Canadian Flag to commemorate the birth of our nations flag. and basically it fell on deaf ears.

Some of the children that I was explaining to them the history and story about the Red Maple Leaf, seemed quite interested.

So the potential is there, I just feel it is up to us to give these children the knowledge of our great country of what it means to be Canadian, where we came from, an idea that yes we do have a Canadian culture and it is okay to take pride in it.  Take a page out of the spirit of The |2010 Winter Olympic Games and pass it along with giving our children ..
A CANADIAN EDUCATION

This blog will not only advocate for more Canadian Content in our Schools (There is a section at the bottom left had side where anyone can voice their opinion on this.  Please visit and do make your points or opinions known),  this will also, along with 4 Season Canuck, http://fourseasoncanuck.blogspot.com/  educate and be a great resource for students studying, and researching Canadian Content.

Finally...

LET'S SEE MORE CANADIAN CONTENT IN OUR SCHOOLS

WHY?

BECAUSE WE HAVE A GREAT COUNTRY TO LIVE IN AND BE PROUD TO PASS IT DOWN TO OUR KIDS.
